Time Savers

Will Rogers once said, “Buy land. They ain’t making any more of the stuff.” The same could be said about time. No matter what you do, you’re never going to have more than 24 hours in a day. You can, however, DO more in those 24 hours.

If you struggle to get everything done that you need to do, these clever time-saving strategies may help:

  • Everything in its place.

Searching for misplaced items can be frustrating and an unnecessary waste of time. Instead, keep things where you will need them. A basket or decorative bowl can be used to hold spare change, keys and sunglasses when not in use. A small filing cabinet is ideal for bills and important paperwork.

  • Become a list-lover.

Set aside time once a week (or daily) to write your To-Do list. Prioritize tasks and check them off as you accomplish each one.

  • Track activities with a weekly calendar.

A dry erase board is a great way to keep track of your family’s multiple commitments. This is also a great way to avoid overextending yourselves. If the spots are becoming full, it’s okay to say “no” to additional activities.

  • Touch it only once.

Get into the habit of sorting mail as it arrives. Discard unwanted mail right away so it doesn’t clutter your countertops.

  • Plan meals in advance.

If you are rushed in the morning, have quick meals like fresh fruit, cereal or yogurt on hand for breakfast. If the evenings are your hectic time, consider cooking once a week and freezing meals so all you have to do is heat them up at dinnertime. That way, you’ll only have to go grocery shopping once a week as well. Leftovers make great lunches for the next day too.
